The Slavic speaking communities live in the isolated region of Golloborda. The border of Macedonia can be seen on the mountain opposite. For decades this community lived closed off from their linguistic relatives existing only hundreds of meters away.

“This photo was taken back in 2021 here on our little island of Hailuoto. I’d just returned home from working on my Dandelions project in Bucharest, documenting the struggles of HIV-at-risk women there, and was feeling restless. The calmness of the summer’s eve felt overbearing, and with the midnight sun dipping for just a couple hours and a sea fog gathering, I made my way to the airstrip where I found this cross formation in the ground. They lay them out to guide airplanes in the dark, almost like a lighthouse. I experimented with some long exposures and the film sat on the shelf for a few months. Later browsing my scans from the lab, this one jumped out at me. The scene felt like an allegory for the Romanian women's stories: wanderers in the darkness seeking a guiding light."
