In 2018 I travelled to Bucharest to document issues of public health and met Alina, a social worker at a local anti-aids charity. She took me on the ambulance as the team offered syringe exchange and testing in the streets of Bucharest. That night there were people crowding outside the ambulance. One of them was Cristina, who showed me her scars as if to say "look at what I've been through”. She was struggling with addiction, working on the streets to pay her bills. There were many others like her, each with a unique story to be told. Since then I have returned to Bucharest repeatedly to document the lives affected by this social crisis. I'm interested in portraying resilience and agency: how those living with addiction navigate circumstances often beyond their control. Through this blend of scholarship and photography, the project not only preserves a fading linguistic heritage but also tells a compelling story of cultural resilience in the Balkans. The field trip was organized by Dr. Maxim Makartsev (Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg) as part of his linguistic research project. Our preliminary findings have been published here. Vanishing Point grows into an allegory for life in the north, where traditional lifestyles and the environment are in transition.This project started from my desire to visualise the ongoing change, which is both external and internal. I packed my car and went on a tour around the northern edge cities during the Covid-19 lockdown soon realising that the desolation I was faced with was less to do with the pandemic and more to do with an existential change caused by depopulation, the crumbling away of traditional industries and global warming.Ever since then, I’ve kept photographing my surroundings in the North where I’ve been faced with changes in the fragile nature of the Arctic. home island of Hailuoto. With this project, I investigate the intrinsic value of nature, its instrumentalisation, and the dynamics of the interaction. Engaging in dialogues amidst the shores of the Bothnian Bay and in its pine forests, I explore the interplay between the island of Hailuoto and its inhabitants, both animal and human. I examine how we perceive ourselves in relation to nature and how our connection to it is defined. Drawing similarities to Butō (舞踏), I look at the multilayered symbiosis and conflict between the human and natural worlds. I am interested in understanding how humans position themselves within their environment, exploring the harmony or discord in this relationship. The exaggerated and expressive movements of Butō create associations with the banality and grotesquery of human actions, serving as an analogy for the ways in which humans instrumentalise their I just don’t think they need to know.” In a country where extremely conservative values are on the rise, coming out is not an option - not even to one’s closest relatives. Out of the dozen people whose lives I followed over the course of the past few years, 5 people have fled from Russia and Ukraine to escape discrimination, persecution and even torture. When starting this project in 2016 I hoped I would see a different Russia four years later but the change for the better is yet to come In July 2019 LGBT activist Yelena Grigoryeva was brutally murdered in her hometown Saint Petersburg.
