True Finns is a photography collection comprising twelve pairs of photos. Each portrait, featuring people of different immigrant backgrounds who live in Finland, is coupled with a landscape representing their personal connection to the country.
The collection seeks to criticise the idea of an exclusive stereotypical Finnish identity, framing the complexity and uniqueness of each of the subjects’ identity as well as the special relationship to the country they live in.
The uniqueness of these identities is reflected in the method: medium format film photography.
“True Finns is a strong and clear idea sparkled by Aino’s personal point of view. She wants to question stereotypes and she does it with an equally clear and strong visual style. That really makes the body of work coherent — great!”
